Reaching Out for Small Business Success Stories

Small Business - JeffKorhan.com
Curation

One of the new buzzwords in the social media circles is curation.  To a great extent, that is what I do.  I read upwards of 50 blog posts every day and then comment on what is relevant to the business success of entrepreneurs and small business owners like you.

And from time to time I have done a different kind of curation with my Small Business Marketing Talk series.  I have interviewed dozens of small businesses and probed for that one thing that has been their most notable success with respect to social media marketing (the focus of this blog).

What I have found most fascinating is that we are all finding our own way – and virtually every application of social media is as unique as each of us and our businesses.  Simple math tells us that if I talk to a sample of 100 small business owners that are all unique. And they run 100 businesses that are equally unique.  The possible number of permutations for using social media is 100 x 100 or 10,000 possible scenarios.

Now you begin to get a grasp for how much we can learn from each other!

Crowdsourcing

In that spirit, I am now reaching out to ask you to share just one tip about what is working for you with respect to your small business marketing.  It doesn't even have to involve social media or Internet marketing.  Because we all can draw lessons from virtually any example.

If you don't have one of those, share a challenge that I can help you with.  If I don't have the answer I'll do the research and consult with my industry peers to find a solution to share with you and the community of this blog.

And if you are bold enough and care to be interviewed by me for a future edition, please step up to the plate.  I can't promise that I'll make you famous, but at the very least you'll be introduced to a community that will embrace your wisdom!

Community

As you can see, people like you are the real drivers of what happens on this blog.  I could blog about other things that interest me that are totally off topic for small businesses.  And come to think about it, I may just do that when I blog about something that has been vital to my success: meditation.

Yep, there are all kinds of ways to succeed in business.  And given the long hours and stress that we all endure, something like meditation can be a blessing.

Does this give you any more ideas for responding to any of those inquiries above?  I hope so.

You know how this works.  Just leave a comment below.  And please forward this to your colleagues who may also wish to participate.  This is wide open.  Let's see where it can go.

See ya tomorrow, Jeff

Facebook Tips for Better Engagement

Today I sat in on a webinar presented by Dan Zarrella.  I met Dan on Twitter during the early days when it was less crowded than now.  He is a self-described – social media scientist. This basically means he is a geek among geeks!

Seriously, as a non-practicing scientist myself who suffered through four years of college chemistry, I really appreciate the research that goes into Dan's work.  He likes to quantify things relative to social media, and not a day goes by that I don't hear someone asking for more ways to do that.

This particular webinar focused on Facebook.  So, here are some insights about Facebook as supported by the data that Dan collected, analyzed, and interpreted (along with some interpretations of my own) that will help you enhance your effectiveness with it.

Know Your Community -  Notwithstanding the fact that everyone comes to Facebook to socialize, it is clear that the younger crowd in their twenties is there for purely that reason, while baby boomers like me are more likely to respond to information.  So, if you are using Facebook to connect with either of these demographics, you will want to be sure to respect their primary reason for being there.

Business Buzzwords Fall Flat – This one should not be a surprise to anyone.  Even on LinkedIn I have a low tolerance for this business-speak.  What are some of the words that caused Facebook users to tune out?  Optimization, leverage, consulting, SEO, and implement.  Sounds like work, doesn't it?

Topics that are Most Often LIKED – If you have a Facebook page, it is most likely to be LIKED if you deal with such topics as food and sex.  Since most of us aren't dealing with sex in our small businesses, I suppose it helps to work food into your conversations once in a while (as I happened to do two days ago on this blog).

It's a Numbers Game – As we all know, people like lists.  Dan proved that having digits (numbers) in your posts will dramatically increase the likelihood that they will be shared.  Along these same lines, a few words that tend to elicit a favorable response are ..why, how, most, and top.  This makes sense, as we are curious to learn more.

What Always Works – Three things jumped out at me that deserve mentioning as the most effective means for encouraging more engagement on Facebook:

  • Be Positive
  • Be Entertaining
  • Help Your Friends Look Cool

There was a lot more covered, but this is the low hanging fruit that you can easily apply to make your Facebook experience more rewarding, and your social media marketing more productive.

If you have a comment to make you can do so below, or you can share this post with your community of friends with the LIKE or ShareThis buttons below.
