Motivation is one of those subjects that people tend to feel strongly about – almost like politics. You may read or hear such declarations as this: Nobody can motivate you – you have to motivate yourself.
This may be true. However, others definitely can inspire us take action. In that sense, they indeed do motivate us.

What Motivates You?
Take a look around your business environment – which for most of us is our office, but may also be your company truck or an entire warehouse. You have most likely personalized this space in some way – by adding family photos, awards of recognition, or items that remind you of some thing, some one, or a particular place.
I have all of those in my office.
What you choose to surround yourself with suggests what inspires you to keep doing what you do well, and they all usually have one thing in common. They simply make you feel good about yourself.
Feeling Good is Good Enough
I’ve always appreciated the line from the film Platoon that feeling good is good enough. Why? Because its true. Everything human beings do is for the sole purpose of being happy – feeling good about what is happening right now.
Yesterday I received some favorable feedback about an article I had written that made me feel good. So, I went back to read what I had written to learn more about why it was so favorably received. What I came to realize is that simply reading my work again made me feel good.
And that motivated me to make the same or a better effort on the unfinished article that I had right in front of me.
Swimming Your Relationships
Today I had an interesting discussion with the creator of an amazing tool that I believe will be a game-changer for small businesses that want to make the most of social media – by integrating it with traditional business practices that have always worked for them. Look for that sometime next week.
We covered a great deal in our 90 minute chat, but one phrase he mentioned that stuck with me is the idea of swimming your relationships – a process of engaging and sharing with people that you know, like, respect, and trust.
Life and business are meaningless without relationships. Success is impossible if you cannot share it. So, the way to stay motivated is to do what you enjoy doing and share your joy for that.
Sharing is swimming with your relationships. It’s a process that helps everyone feel good about what they are doing – or otherwise helps them to get back on track.
What hangs on your walls, sits in your pick-up truck, or is tucked away in your wallet or purse is what inspires and motivates you – a reminder of your relationship with someone that appreciates your contribution.
If you want to grow your business, make a special effort to build new relationships, and nurture those that presently make you feel good about what you do.
After I learn more about it, I’ll share a FREE tool with that will simplify the process of doing this online. Trust me, there is nothing like it available at any price.
