Knowing that more blogs are read at the beginning and end of the week, I always try to start and end my Sunday through Thursday posting sequence with meaty posts.
This will be an exception in that fewer words are necessary to share this idea that I believe is quite powerful, while also being especially universal.
Why I Read Blogs Outside of My Industry
In addition to the many tech and small business blogs I read, there are a few others with an entirely different focus that I consume – such as GalleyCat, a blog whose focus is book publishing.
GalleyCat introduced me to the Everyday iPhone app. This app reminds you everyday (or more often if you choose) to take a picture of yourself. At the end of the year you'll have a time-lapse video movie of your expressive (and progressive) self throughout the previous year.
The results of that effort are pretty cool – with the short video above showing you how it works – and how that activity subtly raises your awareness as a result of who you think may be watching.
Use That Awareness for Productivity
GalleyCat makes the suggestion that you should combine your daily photo opp with building a discipline for throwing down some words to make consistent progress toward your next book.
Great idea. But, there is much more to it than that, whether you aspire to be an author or not.
When you build a practice of creating interesting photos of yourself, you will naturally learn to get better at being your best self. Despite the day you may be experiencing, this will give you a lift – effectively putting a smile on your face.
This is also one of the benefits of social media.
Engaging with our friends brings out our uniquely positive qualities and accomplishments. It helps us to look beyond the trivial obstacles that normally hold us back.
Your core revenue generating practice may not be writing a book, but there is something you could be doing on a daily basis that would dramatically enhance your small business success – if you did it everyday – such as picking up the phone to check in with one of your regular customers.
Awareness is Personal
Here's what is so brilliant about combining a high-value activity with taking your photo everyday. That simple act of taking your picture engages you! It's an action – and it personal.
Writing is personal to authors. For you, what is personal may an activity related to your customers, employees, business partners, or vendors.
Whatever it is, this is an excellent way to bring your focus to it.
What do you think? The app is $1.99. What's it worth to engage and possibly upsell just one of your best customers, and maybe even pick up a referral as well?
Consistent Action Leads to Productivity
You cannot lose with this strategy, because any productive activity that you do on a consistent basis will ultimately produce results.
All you have to do is determine your highest value activity and consistently take action on it.
Using the Everyday iPhone app is a way to bring your awareness to it and make the work you should be doing a lot more enjoyable.
I'm starting tomorrow.
It's all about the awareness.
How about you?
