Yesterday I gave a presentation on social media networking and marketing to a group of real estate professionals at their regional conference here in Chicago. As I try to do as much as possible when I am speaking, I stayed a while longer after my presentation to learn more about the association and these specific members.
Personal Experience Shapes You
The speaker that followed me did an exercise of having each participant share with the group what they felt contributed to their success as a real estate professional. Either directly or indirectly, virtually everyone described how they applied lessons and practices shaped by prior (and typically unrelated) business experiences.
One of the agents had previously been in corporate intelligence, another was a veterinarian, and another construction.
Since I am obviously not a member, I did not participate in the exercise. However, being who I am, I naturally asked myself how I would respond to this question.
Having been a meditation instructor for nearly 15 years, I learned a great deal about the human mind, human behavior, and in general, that being more aware of people and everything else in your environment is incredibly valuable when you are dealing with people in your business – and I would have to imagine that would include most of us.
How about you? What unique business experience has shaped your current best practices? Leave a comment below as I would love to hear from you.
An Exercise in Awareness
Here in the United States our annual Fourth of July celebrations are just around the corner. For those of you that are wondering what meditation is all about, I have an exercise for you that involves watching a fireworks display.
When you are sitting comfortably with your friends and family watching those fireworks, take notice of how you are captivated by that experience, and then you forget about everything else. After a few minutes your attention will often drift from the fireworks to the person watching them – you. And for the briefest of moments, everything in your world feels just right.
That's the experience of meditation!
The source of all of your worries are out there. It is when your mind gets wrapped up in activity that you bring them inside. That is why it is indeed possible to learn to let them go so that you can perform at your best.
As one of these real estate agents mentioned, to perform your best, you have to be like an artist and get into the zone.
I couldn't agree more.
So, this weekend when you are watching the fireworks you may be feeling thankful about your freedoms, and you should.
More importantly, you will also become more aware of the peace that is always within you.
Happy Fourth of July!
