Lately I have been reading several books that have helped me to gain new insights into storytelling.
And lately many of us have been commenting about the latest trends in social media, most of which pertain to privacy. After the initial outrage over the loss of privacy through such technologies such as Google Buzz and Facebook's Open Graph, it seems that the tide is shifting in favor of less privacy.
Without agreeing one way or another, I have an insight that may help you to get more clear about how this can shape your future actions for the better.
When you post images, videos, and comments on the social Web, you are sharing what you believe to be what is interesting. So you tend to share the good stuff. As a result, you tend to be looking around for more good stuff to share.
And soon the time comes – especially if you are an active blogger, where you start running low on good stuff to share. What now? Very simple – you realize you have to go out and create more things in your life that are worth sharing. This naturally keeps you focused on what is good, and encourages you to get off your butt and make it happen!
Cleaning Up the Messes
When you become more aware of creating good things in your life – for you and everyone around you, it becomes necessary to minimize and eliminate what isn't working toward that objective. We all have messes to clean up. Some of them are financial, some relationship based, and others just plain old unproductive bad habits.
The Social Media Lens
What if you had a camera lens on your life? You know you would get more focused on doing more of the right things. You would treat everyone better – and that includes Numero Uno – YOU!
Guess what? Thanks to the recent developments in social media that have begun to erode away our privacy, we indeed do have a lens pointed right at us – and we are center stage. That lens, of course, is social media.
Rewriting the Main Character
As human beings, we all have our conditioned patterns that tend to create the life we are living right now. And social media is recording ever bit of it – both what we want to share, and occasionally other things that accidentally slip through those reduced privacy controls.
You can fight the controls or just write a new story. Problem solved. Now what do you think about Facebook's Open Graph? From this point of view, Facebook is suddenly your friend. They have provided you with everything you need to tell a story that you can be proud of.
This doesn't have to be complicated. While you may want to reconsider your goals in life – what this usually comes down to is most of us want to be liked – LIKED. Seems I've seen a suggestion of that somewhere? Oh yeah, the Facebook LIKE button!
The Opportunity
These are amazing times we are living in. Indeed, there are many problems that need our attention, both locally and globally. But we have this social media phenomenon available to us to make the world a better place, starting right here at home – where we live.
It used to be that we had to go to the movies or read a book to find inspirational stories for living better.
Now we have this new opportunity to create one for ourselves.
Give it a try.
I know I am.
