Everything that you and I do or say eventually becomes part of the social media platform.
I recently posted a live video from a speaking engagement in which I related a personal experience to my audience about how the mention of my daughter's name on Facebook became indexed by Google after 2 and 1/2 years. This is now permanently imprinted on the social media platform.
The point of the story is that you do not have to be a user of the social networks to be part of the medium. You basically just have to be alive and not living in a cave. As long as you are part of society, and interacting with people, you will eventually do or say something that will embed itself into this medium.
That's right, just living today makes you part of social media.
Delivering Happiness
Today I received a UPS package from Zappos, the highly successful online shoe and clothing store that was sold to Amazon last year for over a billion dollars. In the package was an advance copy of Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh.
This is the second book in as many weeks that has been sent to me to review. Why? Because I am living and breathing, interacting with society, and …oh, yes, I have an active blog. No superman talents here – unless you count the one that we all know is essential to social media success – engagement!
Everything Matters
Let's take a look at what is happening here. Tony sold his business to Amazon. Do you really think he needs Jeff Korhan to sell books? Of course not. He has a message to deliver. The simple act of planting the seeds of it months prior the June 7th launch of the hardcover copy is a lesson in how marketing works today.
The release of Tony's book is no different than the mention of my daughter's name on Facebook. They are both human actions that become part of the social matrix or medium. This is a different kind of marketing than most of us grew up with. Truth is, it's really not marketing at all. Yet, in both situations, there is a shift.
Everything about each and every one of us matters. It all counts for something. What we do, how we do it, and especially how it travels across this globe through the magic of this new technology is changing everything. We don't know exactly where it's going – but mostly its going to take us places we could not have otherwise imagined.
This is Really Cool
You can imagine my excitement to learn that I was one of those honored to review an advance copy of this book. Tony Hsieh is a standout among entrepreneurs in part because of his success – but mostly as a result of how he was able to make a difference in achieving it.
I've only read the introduction to the book, but already I'm impressed. Here is the last sentence of that introduction where Tony takes an aerial view of his career and then begins to transition to his story: "My path began on a worm farm."
Is that brilliant! Who wouldn't want to turn the page?
Here's the cool part. Not only did Tony send me a copy for myself, but also one to give away to the readers of this blog.
In the coming week or so I will write another post and give that copy away to a lucky reader.
