Trust yourself and the right words will come.
We are Different, and the Same
Today I had a conversation with a green industry peer about how to speed up the process of writing a good quality blog post.
I had a similar conversation with my son Zak about giving his next presentation in his high school speech class without notes.
And to be honest, even though I speak professionally, I have to remind myself of this in preparation for my speech to tree care professionals tomorrow. Yep, I get anxious before a big talk – and sometimes even a small writing project.
Learn, then Forget
Here is a post I wrote on speed blogging. There are links in there to several other sources. This will help you to build your skills. But that isn't what I'm talking about here. You can have all the skills in the world and still struggle. You actually have to learn to go beyond those skills. You have to trust.
If you sweat the details, seek perfection, and do all of the things you and I were trained to do through our formal education, then you still may fall short of your capabilities. I'm suggesting you may want to learn to forget – not what you know, but how you apply what you know.
Here is a personal example that may help you.
Get in the Groove
I have some time this evening to practice more for my presentation tomorrow – and I will. However, I am confident I know the material. I just need to get off to a good start and I will be fine. More practice is just going to wind me up and increase the anxiety. So what is my secret? I'm doing it now. Blogging!
I discovered by accident that writing settles me down before a presentation. What works for you? What will help you hammer out your blog posts in record time. It may be as simple as the right piece of inspirational music that gets you jazzed.
Give it a try.
But more importantly, learn to trust yourself.
My friend shared this quote from Mark Twain that is insightful and humorous – and true.
" I know my worrying pays off and helps fix things because any problem I worry about never comes about!"
