What's New
TweetDeck allows you to do much more than navigate Twitter. Just last week I had an audience member ask me how he can manage all of his social media communities from one application. Here is is! This recent TweetDeck V 0.33 upgrade certainly makes this application a front runner.
In addition to Twitter, you can now effectively manager your Facebook and LinkedIn communities from TweetDeck, while also having the capability to view images from Flickr and videos from YouTube without leaving the application.
Check out the video to learn more. If you are ready to try it, you can download the new version of Tweetdeck here. However, read on to learn why this is an emerging social media trend.
What Going On Here?
You can expect to see more of this kind of functionality with social media applications as multiple API's are now being knitted together – (that's my non-technical term), to allow you to do more of what you want to do in one place. If you are non-technical, think of it this way. Instead of having hundreds of apps on your iPhone, as some of us do, the technology is now consolidating them in ways that essentially merge many of those apps into one. Another example is Siri – Your social media personal assistant.
Is This a Good Trend?
There is something to love about one stop shopping. That's one viewpoint. The other way to look at this is we may start to see some of the unique qualities that we enjoy about our social media communities diminish. If you love boutique shops that are very adept at serving your human needs, than you know that what is most important about that shopping experience can be lost in an effort to "make things better."
I know that when I am on Twitter, or LinkedIn, or Facebook, I want to be all in – as the poker plays like to say. I want to immerse myself into the community. I don't want to jump back and forth from one to the other, even if I can do that on a single application. For me, the technology is right when it helps me to do what I do better with the people in my communities. If you can help me do that, then I am all in. It's about the people, not the technology.
The video above gives shows you the new TweetDeck is pretty cool compared to the original. However, there is nothing like giving it a test drive to find out for sure if its right for you. Despite my comments above, that's exactly what I'm going to do.
Let me know how you feel about this? I'd love to hear from you.
